Important milestone for the LAL-D community in Italy

We are pleased to see that the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) has approved the reimbursement of sebelipase alfa (KANUMA®) for the treatment of people living with Lysosomal Acid Lipase Deficiency (LAL-D), including both pediatric and adult patients.

As of 19 August 2026, this enzyme replacement therapy is available under reimbursement by the Italian National Health Service, marking an important step forward in access to disease-specific treatment for this ultra-rare condition.

LAL-D remains a significantly underdiagnosed disease, with diagnostic delays that can have a major impact on disease progression and long-term outcomes. Alongside access to treatment, continued efforts to raise awareness, educate healthcare professionals, and promote earlier diagnosis remain essential.

At LAL-D Patient Organization, we welcome every advancement that helps reduce inequalities in access to diagnosis, care, and treatment for people living with LAL-D around the world.

Every step forward matters. Together, we continue working towards a future where no person living with LAL-D is left behind.
